Beachwood Men's Softball League (Ohio) Guestbook
Manny, ASA rules for infield fly rule
The ASA Rulebook defines an Infield Fly as “a fair fly ball, not including a line drive or an attempted bunt which can be caught by an infielder, pitcher or catcher with ordinary effort when first and second or first, second and third are occupied with less than two outs.” (Rule 1, pages 21-22). It further states that the batter-runner is out “when an infield fly is declared. If the fair batted ball hits the batter-runner before reaching first base, the ball is dead and the infield fly is involved.” (Rule 8, Section 2.I). Easy enough – if there is a force at third or a force at home with less than two outs and there is a pop up in the infield, the Infield Fly rule should be in effect. This means that the batter is automatically out, and the runners advance at their own risk. A runner has to tag up to advance on ANY caught fly ball, including when an Infield Fly is called. If the runner leaves the base before the ball is caught, the fielder can throw the ball to the base the runner left and she will be out.

Exciting Events yet to come
The second half--even moreso than the 1st half-- looks as competitive as you can get with many teams bunched together with just 4 weeks to go.

Then the Round Robin and the Championship Series.

We also look forward to 2 new exciting innovations for the Beachwood League-----An All-Star Game and the establishment of Beachwood's Hall of Fame!

Many players have expressed their delight with the quality and competitive aspects of our league this year---and with the addition of the weekly manicured Solon field.  For Jimmy, Manny, Dick, and myself ---  thanks to all of you for your many positive comments about the vast improvements of our league this year.

Good luck to all for the remaining exciting expected photo finish of the 2nd half and our new programs.

Home Plate
Congrats to Baker/Weiskind for taking two from Black yesterday. Hopefully we can re-match in the Championship!

Any chance we can re-visit the "stepping on home plate" issue again since yet another play got hurt from it??? Seems like an overwhelming majority of teams are in favor of having a line to step across for safety.

Adelman/Gross vs. Snyder/Lappin
Well played games my friend. Todd Hartford can really play. Snyder/Lappin was up three in the last inning and unfortunately ended up losing by 1 in extras. Adelman/Gross is a tough match up for anyone but we fought hard.

Bernstein
Mad props to Bernstein/Emerman for fighting against Adelman/Gross with eight players. That's impressive.

LIFE - By Mudcat Grant

This is a classic and one of my favorite Baseball poems.

LIFE - By Mudcat Grant

Life is like a game of baseball,
You play it every day.
It isn't just the breaks you get,
But the kind of game you play.

So stop and look your whole team over,
And you'll find dedication there.
You're bound to be a winner,
With men who really care.

Your pitcher's name is courage,
You need him in the game.
For faith and trust your keystone men,
The grounders they will tame.

Your center fielder is very fast,
Though small and hard to see.
So watch him, son, when he gets,
The ball he's opportunity.

In left field there's ambition,
Never let him shirk.
For in right field there's a husky man,
I'm told his name is work.

At first base there's religion,
He's stood the test of time.
At third base there's brotherhood,
The stalwart of the nine.

Your catcher's name is humor,
He's important to the scheme.
For with honor warming in the bull pen,
The game is always clean.

With love on the bench,
You've perfection no less.
With a winning team,
And joy and happiness.

Your other team is strong, son,
Greed, hatred, envy and defeat.
Are for strong infielders,
You'll have to buck to make your game complete.

Deceitfulness and a man called waste,
Are always playing hard.
Selfishness and jealousy,
None can you disregard.

Carelessness and falsehood,
Are the big boys in the pen.
You'll have to swing hard, son,
When you come up to them.

There's one more man you'll have to watch,
He's always very near.
He's the pitcher on that team,
And I'm told his name is fear.

This game will not be easy,
There'll be trouble, there'll be strife.
To make the winning runs, my boy,
For this game is played on the field of life.

So stand behind your team, my boy,
There'll be many who'll applaud.
Just remember that you're the player,
And the umpire here is God.
